Anticipatory and compensatory postural adjustments in response to translational support surface perturbation

Shanshan Jiao

School of Graduate, Tianjin University of Sport, Tianjin, China

PURPOSE:

Anticipatory and compensatory postural adjustments (APAs and CPAs, respectively) are two main types of adjustment to maintain and restore upright balance in the case of external perturbation. The purpose of this study was to explore APAs and CPAs in response to support surface translations as a window into neural control strategies of postural preparation to action/perturbation.

METHODS:

Seven healthy young subjects were required to make a step in response to translational support surface perturbations. The postural perturbations consisted of 5-cm forward translations of the force plate under the subjects' feet, with peak ramp velocities of 5 cm/s, and peak accelerations of 0.05 g. Sagittal plane balance was perturbed at random intervals by the movable platform in the forward direction. The signals from the force platform and accelerator were digitized at the sampling frequency of 1500 Hz. Postural adjustments were compared from the center of pressure (COP) and from the acceleration of the trunk at the center of mass (COM) level (L5) in the anterior-posterior (AP) direction within the time intervals typical of APAs and CPAs.

RESULTS:

Our results showed that the anticipatory displacement of the COP was smaller and compensatory COP displacement was larger during preparation to making a step associated with support surface translation.

CONCLUSIONS:

These findings highlight the importance of investigating the strategies in response to support surface translations in maintaining control of vertical posture. The results reported here could have clinical relevance to identify the risk of making a step that has been linked to an increased risk of falls among the elderly.

Ping Gao

Research center of sports and health, Wuhan sports university, China

PURPOSE:

We carried out a follow-up investigation on aerobic training of China Canoe Slalom team in the Rio Olympic, aiming to determine the aerobic training proportion, load and effect and demonstrate the significance of aerobic training on slalom athletes.

METHODS:

We adopt the method of literature, observation, test analysis and mathematical statistics to monitor and evaluate the aerobic training of national Canoe Slalom team.

RESULTS:

Zamparo (2005) selected 8 middle to high class slalom kayakers as the test object and designed the contrast experiment, to study the characteristics of energy supply of slalom and 300m in still water. Canoe test time: 85.7±5.3 s, heart rate: 177 ± 7 times/min, lactic acid: 8.1 ±1.6 mmol/L (end of 5 minutes of blood sampling); 300m test time: 88.1 ± 7.7s, heart rate: 184 ± 7 times/min, lactic acid: 11.9±1.5 mmol/L. Experimental results show that the aerobic power in the two tests were 0.61±0.10KW and 0.81±0.11KW, and the energy supply percentages were 45.2% and 47%.In both cases, about 50% of E˙tot derives from aerobic and about 50% from anaerobic energy sources. These data suggest that, besides training for skill acquisition and for improving anaerobic power, some high intensity, cardiovascular conditioning should be inserted in the training programs of the athletes specialized in this sport. The national Canoe Slalom team began to learn about the successful experience of canoe sprint since 2015, and put forward to the idea to strengthen the athletes' aerobic training. In winter of 2015, aerobic training accounted for 52.5%, a doubled amount compared to 26.25% in 2014. When the average heart rate is 150 beats per minute, lactic acid is 4-6mmol/L and the frequency of the propeller paddle is 65-70 for 8km aerobic training, performance of woman kayak key athletes before and after the winter training improved by 5 minutes, and the annual average hemoglobin value was 13.5g/L, with a significant increase compared to 12.9g/L in 2015. In 2016's international competitions, K1M and C1 got to the semi-final, and K1W and C2 got to the finals, which showed that the overall competitive level of athletes increased significantly.

CONCLUSIONS:

Canoe slalom training for athletes should pay attention to aerobic training, arranging for about 50% aerobic training in annual plan and clearing load standard, which has obvious promoting effect on the competitive ability of athletes.
